Ozone-Profiling Lidar System

The customer is designing an ozone-profiling lidar system for measuring the concentration of ozone from ground level up to about 4 kilometer (km) altitude. The system operates in the ultraviolet range and uses multiple receiver telescopes to cover the range.

The dynamic range of the signal is enormous, so small aperture telescopes are used to collect backscattered light from low altitudes and large ones are used to collect backscattered light from high altitudes. The customer is operating simultaneously at three laser wavelengths, and the current design requires a total of nine photodetectors (three telescopes with two detectors each, and a larger fourth telescope with three detectors).

The laser will be pulsed at 10 to 20 Hz. They will sample nominally at 10 MHz to track the laser pulse as it climbs up through the atmosphere, which will provide a vertical resolution of 15 meters. An altitude of 4 km will require 267 samples at this resolution. The customer will average approximately 1000 pulses worth of data together in order to beat down noise to a manageable level. No data processing is done during the averaging.

GAGE'S SOLUTION

A high resolution digitizer with 50 MHz bandwidth. Using Gage's software development kits, the customer can create custom programs to achieve required results.
