General Questions
Q. Is CompactPCI a better bus for my test system than PCI? What advantages does it bring?
A. CompactPCI is electrically and software-wise identical to PCI. Just like a PCI system, a typical CompactPCI chassis is also controlled by a Pentium class CPU and motherboard chipset. In this respect CompactPCI is no better and no worse than PCI.
What CompactPCI does add is mechanical ruggedness, better air flow and enhanced EMI shielding. All in all, this leads to higher system reliability and shorter down time.
Mission critical applications can definitely take advantage of CompactPCI based waveform digitizers.
